Antique Clocks Are History On Your Shelf

Antique mantel Clock
Grandfather clocks, wall clocks, mantel clocks, cuckoo clocks, pendulum clocks, tower clocks, lantern clocks, grandmother clocks:  These are just a few of the MANY types of clocks.

For just about as long as I can remember I have been fascinated by clocks.  Perhaps it was because my dad went to watchmaker’s school and also like watches and clocks.  Or perhaps it was the fascinating gears and other mechanisms inside.  Or maybe it was the rhythmic ticking noise they make.

No, I think it was because early on I realized that clocks had a tie to time.  They had a connection with past, present and the future…but primarily the past.  And ANTIQUE CLOCKS, well… they had a character about them that is not easily reproduced.

Over a period of years, I have purchased several antique clocks.  One I gave away to my father.  One I keep in our bedroom.  When you open them up and look how they are made it is wonderful to see the crudely formed parts contrasting with the more precise parts.

Some of the old cabinetry surrounding these mechanisms are works of art in their own right.  Many of the old mechanisms are tricky and need cleaning or adjusting from time to time.  For the most part I can maintain them myself.

Years ago, a friend brought in a clock he was working on to where we worked.  This antique wall clock had wooden gears!  One of these gears was damaged and he (being a mechanical engineer) was reconstructing a new one to revive this cherished piece of history.

This is just one of many examples of people I know who love collecting and restoring old clocks.  Some people love just collecting them.  If you want a crazy experience, be in a clock shop when the chime strikes on the hour.  It is like being in either a dream or a nightmare depending on your point of view.

I love the sound of an old clock ticking away softly.  It reminds me of my grandmother’s house when I was growing up.  Of course, back then I didn’t understand the mechanisms but I knew that they were fun to wind and watch the gears move.

I found the antique mantel clocks that I purchased at local antique shops.  They came with a premium and the variety was not very good even though I am in a pretty large town.  This is the reason for this website Flikkema Woodworks.  It gets you access to clocks of all types.  Some are antique and some are not.  Some clocks are new and some are old.  Some clocks are restored and some are in need of repair.

YOU get to choose from a much wider selection of clocks and a broader range of prices because of more competition.  I make a very small amount from passing you through to the product you want.  So look around the site using the post menu on the right.  We hope you find the clock (or antique clock) you have been dreaming of.
