Deeper Insight On Gear Materials
Gear is a mechanical device to transmit rotational motion or to change the speed. Gears find a great use in any mechanical device. In olden days gears were made with wooden wheels. As technology has progressed a long way since then, modern involutes are being used in the making of gears. Gear manufacturing is generally difficult and time consuming. It can produced with various materials. Aluminum, steel, brass, copper, wood, cast iron, plastic are some such materials which are used for production of gears.
Aluminum gears are used to provide durability and performance As the metal is malleable and it can be molded to any shape. They provide smooth running, longer life and high strength. They are widely used in aircraft design and in instrument gears.
Cast iron gears provide superb surface finish and good stability. They are produced at a lower cost. Though it provides hardness it also has some weaknesses. They can be used only for large surfaces or diameters as only in such conditions they can handle high torque loads. They find a widely used in commercial gears like sugarcane crushers, grinding mills, etc.
Copper is malleable and ductile metal and thus can be easily used to machine gears. Copper gears provide high strength and are resistant to corrosion. When they are mixed with tin produces bronze which offers high strength and low friction. They are used in semiconductor industries, radiators, mining and aerospace.
Plastic gears are predominantly used in low power drives like clocks, motorized toys and lawn sprinklers. They are highly resistant to corrosion and chemical effect. But sometimes they can have negative effects on reaction with some chemicals. They have high strength and can withstand high tangential force. But they cannot operate at high temperatures.
Wooden gears though , are a primitive form of gear, are still used in wind mills, flour mills, coal mines and clocks. They are easier to make and easier to repair. But they have low durability and dimensional stability.
