Clock Springs And Their Value For Powering Clocks
Clock springs, or power springs, are long, coiled strips of metal that are tightly wound into a loop. From a physics standpoint, the spring is structured so that like most other conventional springs, it will store kinetic energy and release it outwards. These particular springs store energy for a very specific purpose.
The internal spring that powers mechanical clocks and watches is of the design that is commonly known as a spiral spring. This spiral spring, called the clock's mainspring, slowly uncoils inside the watch. As the mainspring uncoils, another spring called the balance spring drives a counteracting force using a wheel to push back at the mainspring. When these two forces push and pull at each other at a regular rate, it drives a lever that powers the movement of gears and dials inside a clock. It takes precise engineering and assembly in order for a clock to move its hour, minute and second hands in accurate synchronization with the telling of time, thanks to the balance and clock springs.
The mainspring must be regularly wound. Winding the spring ensures that the mainspring is able to continue its function as the beating heart of a clock's operations. To keep the clock ticking even as the mainspring is being wound, an alternate maintaining power spring can be sometimes used as a backup for the mainspring when the mainspring is out of play.
The interplay of clock springs fuel thousands of timepieces around the world. Just as these clocks require precise function, so too must the specific construction and manufacture of these springs be up to the task.
