How to make a curved wood panel ?
i want to build a grandfather clock in my wood shop class and it has curved sides, we don't have a steamer or a press so i need an idea. This is what i want it to look like http://www.grandfatherclocksplus.com/gfcp/images/items/01166-Q20461.jpg
In a production setting, those sides would be glued up in forms.
Here is a product I've used to achieve all kinds of shapes -

You can use this product for the sides and for making the top piece, the clock enclosure. Use 2 layers, and you can glue them together with wood glue, or contact adhesive. By gluing 2 layers together, it will retain the shape, even after the clamping / form(s) have been removed. Then you can use your choice of veneer over the surface. (or laminate, if that's your choice -- I'd go with a wood veneer myself)
I used to order this bendy ply by the bunk, when I was a woodworking production manager, hehe.
Your other option is to use a thin plywood, and glue it up in layers, or a thicker ply, and kerf the backside. To kerf a plywood so it will bend, you run it across a table saw, spaced about every 1/4" to 1/2", at a depth so that it cuts into the next to last solid layer of ply. (This will vary depending on how much bend you want in the finished product.) So, on a 3/4" piece of plywood you're going to cut kerfs into it, up to 5/8".
Once you have the plywood kerfed to bend sufficiently, clamp it in a form, and glue a veneer layer over the kerf cuts.
This can take quite a bit of work, heheh. In a production setting, I'd order the Bendy ply, as it could be shaped much more quickly, and easily.
If you look at the frame of the clock face, you'll notice it was made by gluing up 4 pieces. You could do that, or glue up several thin strips, to avoid the obvious glue line. Again, you'd clamp it in a form, and use wood glue.
I recommend Titebond II for general woodworking, Titebond III for when it has to be water proof after it sets. Quick tip -- place a layer of wax paper between the wood surface and the clamp, to avoid a 'black line' from the clamp.

Just following up on the email - Veneer doesn't have to look plain, or bad. Most commercial veneering is done for the cost savings, not looks. Check out these entries in Veneer Tech's Craftsman Challenge - http://www.veneertech.com/
And, since the goal here isn't necessarily to make a production clock, but rather, to get a good grade.... you might get more consideration from your instructor, if you have to build the tools you need to make your project... in this case, you might consider making a steam box and forms - here is a link to how to do this - http://www.ceolas.org/instruments/bodhran/santin/MakeBox.htm
There are several "how to's" to go about making a steam box for bending wood, that you can find online.
My first approach tends to be "how can I get this done?" from a production standpoint.... that was my career, after all. In this situation though, you may want to go thru the extra steps of actually bending the wood.
