What Motivates Leaders? - an extract from a wonderful leadership motivational speech
Ever wondered - what makes a great leader? Ever asked yourself why are there so many managers in the world and so few leaders? Ever thought about what's the difference between a manager and a leader?
Many people have answered these questions in many different ways. But the answer that I like best is the one that goes like this:
The difference is:
- Managers think incrementally, while leaders think radically.
- Managers do things right, while leaders do the right thing.
- Managers follow the book and follow company policy, while leaders follow their own intuition.
Generally speaking, a leader is far more emotional than a manager. And when you consider that "Men are governed by their emotions rather than their intelligence," you'll begin to understand why teams choose to follow leaders.
It's because leaders are emotionally attractive to us. They try harder than most and they are far more focused than most. They know the value of time. And they are superb time managers... they make every second count!
Talking about ‘Time Management' and ‘Seconds' brings to mind a curious piece of information that I heard once about how pennies affect the accuracy of the Great London clock - Big Ben's time keeping.
Thanks to the foresight and leadership genius of it designer, Pugin, and the teams of professional craftsmen who were involved in the construction work and the creation of the giant clock's mechanism, Big Ben has always been world-famous for its reliability. So accurate is Big Ben that it sets the time for many worldwide events and it rings in the New Year for countless millions of people all over the world.
The great clock's pendulum is installed within an enclosed windproof box sunk beneath the clock room. It is 3.9m long, weighs 300 kg and beats every 2 seconds. It's so well protected that it has withstood the tests of time – in good times... and in hard times too!
For example: despite the heavy bombing during WW2 the clock ran accurately and chimed day and night all throughout the Blitz. In those very difficult years when just about everything was falling apart Ben was a rock of stability. He became a highly emotional symbol of defiance! Every morning Londoners looked to see if Big Ben was still there. And he was! And he still is!
But even Big Ben with all his leadership qualities of reliability, accuracy and stability needs adjustment every now and again. And this is where the pennies come in.
Not many people know that on top of Big Ben's pendulum is a small stack of old penny coins; these are to adjust the time of the clock. You see, adding a coin has the effect of minutely lifting the position of the pendulum's centre of mass, reducing the effective length of the pendulum rod and hence increasing the rate at which the pendulum swings. Adding or removing a penny will change the clock's speed by 0.4 seconds per day.
Those small pennies are an important part of Ben's efficiency. They teach us an important lesson in leadership. And the lesson to be learned from them is that often greatness can only be maintained if leaders are prepared to continually make the required changes to keep everything ticking over on time.
This involves constant attention to how every part of the system operates, and every person in the team interacts with each other. Actually, it's a lot of hard work!
And this is perhaps the greatest leadership characteristic of all – ‘hard work'.
Because while great leaders are influencers... high achievers... visionaries... anticipators... and professionals who never compromise on quality... the key characteristic of a really great leader is someone who is not afraid of hard work.
So if you want to be a great leader... start working hard!
