The Birth Of The 24 Hour Clock
Man realized very early that the shadow cast by an upright object such as a stick, stone, or tree changed as the sun seemed to move across the sky throughout a day. The lengthening and shortening of the shadows told him not only the general time of day but in addition that the seasons were changing.
Man also told time by the movement of the stars at night. If you watched the sky every night for a month, you would notice that as the night passes, different stars become visible. The Egyptians used the rising of different stars to turn the sky into their own gigantic timepiece. By 2500 B.C. they had divided the night into 12 time periods, corresponding to the rising of 12 stars. They called each star a decan. A nightwatchman, for instance, might stand a watch of 3 decans. When he saw the fourth decan, or star, appear, he would know that his watch was over and that one fourth of the night had passed. Since they believed that the night and the day were twins, the Egyptians divided the day in to 12 periods also.
Our 24-hour day is based on the Egyptian division of day and night. The division of the hour into 60 minutes and the minutes into 60 seconds came from the Babylonians. The Egyptians combined the Babylonian system with their own count of 24 hours in a day. To mark the passage of the daylight hours, they made shadow clocks. The first shadow clocks were simply blocks of wood with a pointer. As the sun seemed to move across the sky, the shadow made by the pointer changed its length and position. Eventually the Egyptians made shadow clocks with 12 periods of time to divide the day. The shadow clocks were also called sundials.
