VandM's HOME DÉCOR & COLLECTIBLES HOT LIST FOR 2010
With more and more dealers making the move to digital, Bill Indursky, Co-Founder of VandM.com, offers VandM.com's list of what's hot in the world of antiques and collectibles for 2010.
WHAT'S HOT IN 2010:
"Some of the biggest trends in 2010 are Victorian-influenced patterns and imagery, WPA Deco and its use of sepia and stone sculpture, a continuation of the 1980s with more bright colors and tone-on-tone spaces, and finally, furniture as sculpture and the increased use of natural materials." – Bill
THE NEW ROMANTIC
"During the Victorian Era there was a significant cultural change, the industrial revolution, which pushed and shaped their world. We are in the midst of our own revolution, technological and economical, and like the Victorians, we feel nostalgia for a simpler time. We will be fascinated by many of the same interests as the Victorians, including: mysticism, nature, and primitive forces. This trend will affect FABRIC and PATTERN CHOICES for home décor as well as govern the dominate style attitude." – Bill
It will affect HOME FABRICS so look for…
- Maharaja: Indian pattern in all forms
- Paisley: A logical extension of Maharaja
- Tapestry: Needlework and stitching
It will dominate our STYLE conscious so look for…
- Industrial Americana to be the strongest style trend
- Macabre and the Occult: A general cultural interest in the ugly and all things dead, including the Vampire craze that will continue.
It will affect COLLECTIBLES & ART so look for…
- Taxonomy & Collections: an emphasis on grouped collections of similar items
- Tsarist Russia: A tendency to gravitate toward ornate and elaborately gilt single objects such as bronze Dore mantle clocks to reassert our wealth in small ways in our home
- Machines of Learning: In Victorian times they developed a love for machines that visually represented the "invisible world". Look for Armillary spheres and celestial globes to become more popular as a collectible.
- Femme Fatale: Will reemerge as a cultural interest in movie, TV and art. Look for women to be portrayed as powerful, mysterious, and dangerous. Art will express women and nature.
WPA DECO
"We've recently survived one of the largest economic downturns in American history, which is why we might be feeling similar to those that lived through the great depression. The Works Progress Administration (WPA) was the government bailout of its day and put around 3.3 million people back to work beautifying our country and rebuilding our infrastructure. It stays memorable largely due to the visual artists who left an entire body of work chronicling America in that day thanks to Uncle Sam." - Bill
It will affect PHOTOGRAPHY AND GRAPHICS…
- Sepia Tones: All things brown and dark and moody will crop up for artists and graphics designers, especially in Photography.
It will affect ART, COLLECTIBLES, and FURNITURE so look for…
- Deco Sculpture: Simple, smooth, and chiseled forms in stone. Stone is the key and will start to edge out metal as the chosen material for sculpture.
- Stone: The translucent quality of stone, like alabaster marble, will crop up more in kitchens, come back in sconces, and be part of large rock crystal table lamps.
THE 1980S ARE STILL BACK
"What started at the end of 2008 and built steam in 2009 will continue to get stronger throughout 2010."
- Bill
It will affect INTERIOR DESIGN STYLES so look for…
- Industrial "N.Y. Loft": all white boxes, with pops of black metal and natural wood
- The Tone-On-Tone Interior: often in pastel shades (pastel pale blue, pastel pale green, pastel pale yellow, and the new one to watch for - mauve)
- The 80s Pop-Graphics Look: bright neon and primary color interiors with clean hard lines and pattern
- Deco Redux: the eighties loved the 1920s and did Deco their way, now we will see more true WPA style Deco again often with some textural twists from the 80s era.
ENVIRONMENT & SCULPTURE
"Healing the planet and the recent climate conference are bringing a lot of attention to the environment. Combine this with nature inspired forms and natural materials and you get a real green movement in design. Once again, artists are exploring the role of sculpture, individuality, nature and what environment really means. Be prepared to see design interiors looking less like a furniture showroom and more like an artistic immersed surrounding of environmental sculpture." – Bill
It will affect BUILDING MATERIALS, SCULPTURE, and INTERIOR DESIGN FORMS…
- Atypical eco-friendly: Items that don't necessarily seem eco but really are.
- Reclaimed wood: used in furniture and interiors
- Steel: rusted Corten is best but look for this in sculpture and architecture and interiors.
- Gold replacing silver: as the dominate metal for jewelry and interiors.
- Sculptural furniture: furniture of wood and plaster that will be whimsical and figurative
- Handmade studio furniture: mostly out of wood, bronze, and other metals will dominate high-end interiors.
- Environmental sculpture and graphics: will be seen in art and public spaces
The SERIOUS FURNITURE COLLECTOR will want in 2010…
Shaker American Furniture, Sculptural / Artist / Studio Made Furniture, Americana and Industrial Americana
The HOT COLLECTIBLE in 2010 will be…
Studio Art Glass, Tapestries, and Deco Sculpture Preferably in Stone
The COLOR TO LOOK OUT FOR in 2010 will be...
Mauve
STYLES To Look For in 2010...
Eastern Indian and clean line and lighter wood Victoriana
