Determining Weight for a Corner Wall Shelf
Anytime you go to purchase a corner wall shelf, you want to have a good idea as to the things you will be putting on the shelf. The reason is that each type of shelving unit is rated for a specific weight range. That means if you buy a shelf rated to hold 20 pounds and you put 30 pounds of "stuff" on it, you risk having the entire unit and all your goods on it crashing to the floor.
Take a glass corner wall shelf as a prime example. While there is not exact answer, there are a number of dynamics to consider. For instance, with glass, the thickness and density of the glass shelf itself will play a huge role in how much weight the unit can hold. Obviously, if you purchase a corner wall shelf made with glass and the shelf is thin, then the amount of weight will be much less than if the glass were thick.
Of course, in addition to the glass shelf itself, you also want to take the supports into consideration. If you choose heavy-duty supports and instead of installing two you go with three, then you now have a unit that can accommodate more weight. However, even if the supports are top notch, if the glass is thin, the supports might stay in place with heavy weight items but the glass could rack or completely shatter.
Now, if you know that you need a sturdy corner wall shelf, one that can hold significant weight then make sure to use brackets designed specifically for this purpose. This way, you can put install the shelving, display your items, and feel 100% confident that everything is safe and secure. After all, if you are putting in a corner wall shelf, chances are that you have run out of space but still have important things you want to display. This means you want a shelving unit that will give you the surface and/or storage area needed but without worry of it falling.
There is really no difference as far as installation for a corner wall shelf in something simple or heavy-duty. The only things you might notice is that the supports or brackets are heavier and the shelf itself could weigh more than other shelving types. If this is the case, you could ask for assistance from a family member or friend and have your new corner wall shelf up in no time. Once in place, the fun begins with the decorating. At that point, you get to enjoy the fruits of your labor.
A good rule of thumb to follow is that always put less on the shelf than you think it can hold and if in doubt, leave an item off. In most cases, you can tell when corner wall shelves have too much on it in that the shelf will sag or if using brackets and supports, you would see them being pulled away from the wall. While installing the supports into the wall studs will give you the best stability, pay attention to any changes and if you see the shelf struggling, remove the heavier objects.
