Hamilton mantel clock 340-020 replacement of gears?
I have a clock that was given to my father on his retirement from general motors in 1990. I would assume the clock is more then likely a 1980's model. The original gears that are in the clock have since gone bad from years of winding the clock with the key. This clock has a lot of meaning to me and I am wanting to restore the clock to working order. From what information I have found, I can purchase used gears for around $50.00 and new ones for over $200.00. I am not wanting to mess with the used ones due to the fact that the average life of these gears is 7 years and new ones are just to much money.
What I am wanting to do is either replace the "guts" with either a battery operated gear or one with a different type of mechanical gear that would be less cost and last longer.
Any information anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated. I know that changing the inside degrades the clocks value but all I am wanting is to have the Clock working.
There are several web sites that sell clock parts. Any one of them also sell the electronic movements that can be substituted for your old geared one. The changeover is usually quite easy and it does solve the wear problem. The important measurements are the shaft diameter and shaft length. I've done it several times with satisfactory results. I recommend that you pay a little more and get the movements that allow you to change the chimes as well as those that have a nighttime shutoff. Try www.slarose.com for what you need.
