An Introduction to the Dodge Challenger

Out of all the muscle cars produced, the Dodge Challenger remains one of the most liked among enthusiasts. The Dodge name is part of the car producing company Chrysler and their success carries on even decades after the first Dodge autos rolled on to the roads.

The Dodge Challenger life began during 1970, with the first generation Challenger. Then from that point, Dodge carried on to build the second generation version in 1978 and finally the 3rd generation Challenger in 2008.

Getting Started, 1970 to 1974,First Generation

Many folks wondered which other cars the Dodge Challenger would compete against. Immediately after the specs and styling details of the new Challenger were made public, it was apparent that the likes of the Ford Mustang and the Camaro would have a huge fight on their hands. The advantage they had though; these cars were by now very popular.

Dodge got to work designing the best muscle car they possibly could. Whilst it was to be compared with the Mustang, it featured a greatly shorter wheelbase. Dodge certainly tried to do things their own way, building a car that was much more luxurious, offering owners much more creature comforts.

Thanks to prior knowledge designing the Charger in 1966, Dodge assumed Carl Cameron would be up to the task of developing the new Challenger. Without doubt, he did a very good job.

With the features that Carl Cameron incorporated, with some great branding all worked well for the company. At the end of 1974, the company had shifted over 165000 Dodge Challengers.

Onwards and Upwards, 1978 to 1983,Second Generation

With the huge sales Dodge saw with the original Challenger, it was clear that there had to be further great things to come. This finally came in 1978 with the second generation Dodge Challenger, building to its ever increasing popularity.

The main thing that was clear here was that it was essentially no different to the Plymouth Sapporo. With that said, Dodge made certain they produced this vehicle their own way by updating the inside and exterior styling to distinguish it somewhat as more indulgent and make sure that it had a sportier style in comparison.

One more area to take note of was the engine set up. Rather than a huge block, they used to install a 2.6L 4 cylinder engine that although tiny, gave the car a comfortable amount of power.

The Rebirth, 2008 Onwards

Clearly modern businesses attempt to keep with trends, and Chrysler were aware that they had a great opportunity with the retro styling really picking up, so did not want to stop back in the 1980s. 2008 saw the release of their third generation vehicle to many greatly anticipating Dodge fans.

With the release of the 3rd generation the Dodge Challenger continues its success, and will probably do so for a long time.
