Decorating With Wall Decor - How Placement Creates Impact
Finding and purchasing beautiful wall decor to accent any room is just half the battle. To get the most visual impact from a piece of wall art or a grouping, there are many factors to consider. A piece that is too small for a particular wall will look lost and skimpy and a piece that is too big will overwhelm the space and look too imposing. Here are some tips on how to make the most of decorative wall art so that it creates the designer impact you imagined.
The Shape of Things to Come
When purchasing wall art, in addition to its style, color and size, consider how the shape of the piece will work in the room, how it will look with your furnishings, and whether it enhances the mood you wish to create. Strong horizontal lines guide your eyes around the room, while strong vertical points cause your gaze to momentarily pause. Rounded shapes have a more calming and relaxed feel than angular shapes. Create visual rhythm in a room not only with what you place on the walls but with blank space. Your mind needs a place to rest in order for a focal point to have impact. If everything is competing for attention, nothing stands out.
Consider the Size & Shape of the Wall
When hanging wall art, consider your wall as a blank canvas. You want some wall space around the art as a visual border or it will look as though the art was crammed into the space. A piece that looks too wide for a narrow space will look awkward and pieces that are hung too close together will look crowded. Before hammering nails on a wall, try your grouping on the floor to get a general idea of the arrangement. Trace the outlines of each piece onto a piece of brown paper, cut out the pieces and arrange and re-arrange them on the wall with masking tape until you're happy with the display. Check the back of each piece for the location of the hanger and make a light mark on the wall with a pencil behind the corresponding piece of paper, then hang your wall décor.
Smaller Wall Hangings and Groupings
A grouping of smaller wall hangings can have just as much impact as one large piece. The key is to create balance by playing smaller pieces against larger ones and to combine vertical elements with horizontal. For example, the horizontal lines of a wall shelf can be balanced against a picture or mirror with strong vertical impact, i.e., one that is taller than it is wide. A large square painting can be balanced with three round mirrors or wall plates. Unite grouped items by theme, color or shape to make a cohesive statement.
Hanging Decor at the Proper Height
A common mistake is to hang wall art too high on the wall. The rule of thumb is to hang it so that the center of the piece is approximately sixty inches off the floor; this is a height that would be appropriate for most people to comfortably view the piece. If, however, you are hanging a large piece of art, such as a carpet or large painting, on an oversize wall or one that spans more than one level, you would generally center it on the wall. Items placed over sofas should be at a height that doesn't pose a danger when sitting or standing. When an item will be viewed from a seated position, such as in a dining area, take that into consideration when hanging the piece. Use your paper template first and sit down to see if the height is appropriate.
