The History of Denim Jeans
For many of us, we have at least a pair or two of denim jeans that we're sure look incredible on us. They feel right, they fit right and they look right. Ever wondered where the idea was born and when? And how long did it take before they were considered a fashion statement instead of a durable fabric used in the work force? Here's a bit of history on our ""can't live without"" fabric:
In May of 1873, Levi Strauss received a U.S. Patent for its denim jeans and especially the rivets he incorporated to ensure their strength and durability. The denim jean was officially born. Since then, it's become a multi-billion dollar industry around the globe.
It wasn't until the 1950s when movie stars such as James Dean began wearing Levis did they become such a fashion staple. A new look was born, but generally, it applied only to men. That is, until the early 1980s when American actress Brooke Shields brought denim jeans to the forefront of the fashion industry with her now-famous line of, ""Nothing comes between me and my Calvin Klein jeans"". Sergio Valente and Jordache were two other designer jean makers who combined elaborate stitching and denim to define designer jeans. This look has seen a new surge of popularity over the past few seasons.
Contrasting thread seams and intricate design elements are just a couple of "blasts from the past" that are seen on the most well dressed around the world.
