Traditional Low Country House
Traditional low country style homes are designed to reflect classical proportions. They can vary in size from the traditionally tight and narrow Charleston single to the large, open four-square style of plantation houses. Additionally, the low country house can boast formal exterior details such as crown moulding and turned balusters, or it can feature the relaxed details of exposed rafter tails and square columns often associated with cottages.
Regardless of formality, traditional low country homes offer deep porches to expand the living space outdoors which is an obvious style choice for entertainers. Compared to other American styles, low country homes have a relatively low sloped roof, often covered in metal. A low country unique house plans are both charming and inviting, two characteristic that make it a staple style in the south.
How do you decide which low country style house plan is right for you? The first thing to consider is your site. Is your site wide and sprawling or tight and narrow? If you have a long, narrow lot, you might consider a Charleston single style house. Where are your views? Most often your views are off the back of the house overlooking water, a golf course, or an undeveloped forest.
However, sometimes your views are from the front of the house. Once you consider your views, the next thing to consider is your porches. Do you want double (two-story) or single porches facing the views? Do you need a screen porch? In the low country house plans, a screen porch off of the kitchen or living space is often used as a protective dining space to enjoy nice evenings outdoors.
Your next step is to consider your program. That is, what kind of spaces do you require? Do you need a formal dining room, an office or an extra TV room? What about a playroom or a space for hobbies? Everyone has different wants and needs and it is necessary to decide which spaces are most important to you. When considering your spaces, think about how often you entertain and what kind of entertaining you do.
The deep porches of the traditional lowcountry house plans are a great way to expand living and entertaining space outside on a beautiful day. Additionally, it may be important for you to connect your kitchen to your living space not only for entertaining (because we all know the number one stop for guests is the kitchen) but for everyday use as well. Next, you will need to think about the number of bedrooms you will require. Also, is the master bedroom upstairs or downstairs?
Which bedrooms have the best views? Once you have decided on your program, or spaces, you will need to decide on what type of exterior detail you want. The traditional low country home falls into two style categories. The first is the highly formal colonial style with crown moulding, round columns, and turned balusters. The second is the more relaxed style of exposed rafter tails, square columns, and simple trim often associated with a farm house. Both are beautiful and bare there own elegance, so it is important to ask yourself, Am I looking for a highly formal house, or a simple and relaxed style house?
Finally, you want to take in account parking. Do you need an attached or detached garage? Most low country homes do not have attached garages due to site restriction and for aesthetic reasons. For this reason, you may consider adding a detached garage plans to your site. Garages not only house and protect your cars and bicycles, but they can also provide you with extra storage and even living space. If you do not need the extra storage space, an open portico or carport might be what you are looking for instead.
