Portsmouth Guide: Great days out by train

Jumping on the Portsmouth train will transport you to a town that combines a wealth of historic attractions with restaurants, bars and leisure facilities to make a great all-year-round destination for days out by train.

One of three Portsmouth train stations, Portsmouth Harbour is just a short stroll from the waterfront and many of the best attractions. This Portsmouth guide will help you to make the most of your days out by train when you visit Portsmouth.

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

Visit Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and you will enjoy discovering more about Admiral Lord Nelson, Henry VIII, World War Veterans and Portsmouth Dockyard workers. Learn about life on board three of the world's most famous warships ever built, HMS Victory, HMS Warrior 1860 and the Mary Rose. A Portsmouth guide has to recognize its rich maritime tradition and the dockyard voyages enchantingly through its history. To save money on admission visit our Special Offer pages when you go by train.

Action Stations

Action Stations within Portsmouth Historic Dockyard bring the modern Royal Navy directly to you with an exciting mixture of physical challenges, simulators and technological experiments. Test your skills on displays, climbing walls and simulators!

The Spinnaker Tower

The Spinnaker Tower stands at a height of 170 metres (558 feet)—two and a half times the height of Nelson's Column, making it the tallest accessible structure in the United Kingdom outside of London. A striking viewing tower, it offers spectacular views from three platforms and a fantastic reason to get on the Portsmouth train.

Gunwharf Quays

Gunwharf Quays boasts 90 designer shopping outlets, numerous cosmopolitan bars and restaurants, a 14-screen cinema, 26-lane bowling complex, contemporary art gallery, comedy club, casino and nightclub.

Blue Reef Aquarium

Among the biggest incentives to visit Portsmouth is the Blue Reef Aquarium, a treasure trove to all things fishy.  From seahorses to sharks there are over 40 living displays featuring fascinating marine life from around the world. Disembark from the Portsmouth train then take the No 5 or 700 bus from Portsmouth Harbour train station (approximately every 30 minutes) or one of several buses to Palmeston Road, which is only a five minute walk away.

Portsmouth City Museum

No destination guides could overlook the Portsmouth City Museum, which showcases displays such as the 'Story of Portsmouth' and 'Football in the City', as well as other temporary exhibitions, throughout the year. The Museum is also home to Portsmouth Records Office and is a short walk from another Portsmouth train station, Portsmouth and Southsea. The Museum is free and open all year round

Millennium Promenade

Last but by no means least in this Portsmouth guide, the Millennium Promenade offers a walk which begins at Historic Dockyard and is marked by a chain pattern in the pavement. It's easiest to pick up the trail from the east side of Gunwharf Quays and follow through to Southsea, around by Spice Island, the round tower and along the fortified walls built by Henry VIII.
