Suicide the new fashion trend amongst teens
The rise in the suicide toll amongst teens set off alarm bells within society and created a stir amongst researchers. A Study was done to get to the crux of the matter and why these cases are increasing especially amongst black youth. Why these teens killing themselves and how do we stop the future leaders of South Africa cope with traumatic experiences that they have been through.
Society is not doing enough for the teens in preparing them for the environment that they are growing up in and have to function in. They are therefore unable to handle these difficult situations and therefore fold under the pressure and stresses that modern day living has to offer.
Media24.com says that: “Most teens interviewed after making a suicide attempt say that they did it because they were trying to escape from a situation that seemed impossible to deal with or to get relief from really bad thoughts or feelings. Like Ethan, they didn't want to die as much as they wanted to escape from what was going on. And at that particular moment dying seemed like the only way out.
Some people who end their lives or attempt suicide might be trying to escape feelings of rejection, hurt, or loss. Others might be angry, ashamed, or guilty about something. Some people may be worried about disappointing friends or family members. And some may feel unwanted, unloved, victimized, or like they're a burden to others.
We all feel overwhelmed by difficult emotions or situations sometimes. But most people get through it or can put their problems in perspective and find a way to carry on with determination and hope. So why does one person try suicide when another person in the same tough situation does not? What makes some people more resilient (better able to deal with life's setbacks and difficulties) than others? What makes a person unable to see another way out of a bad situation besides ending his or her life?”
People are like name brands they have their own character and special qualities. The character and qualities of the one might be durability and the other style therefore the one will last longer then the other brand. People are different and handle situations differently; their mind works differently and therefore reacts to pain in a different way to a cousin, friend, sister, brother or even an identical twin sibling.
According to ncsl.org. “Suicide among children and adolescents in South Africa is on the increase and children as young as 10 years old have committed suicide.
This is according to statistics released by Prof Lourens Schlebusch of the Department of Behavioral Medicine at the Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine, University of Natal.
Schlebusch conducted research on suicide over a period of 25 years. Until recently, reliable statistics have been unavailable. For the first time there is a more accurate picture of the prevalence of suicide in South Africa.
According to Schlebusch, approximately six to eight thousand people commit suicide in South Africa every year, making suicide the third greatest cause of unnatural death in the country after homicide and unintentional causes. On average 9% of deaths in young people, especially black youth, in South Africa are due to suicide. This is almost as high as adult suicide rates. Approximately one third of all patients admitted to hospital after attempted suicide, are children or teens”.
Ncsl.org states that “Suicide is the third leading cause of death in 15 to 24 year olds, and the third leading cause of death in 10 to 14 year olds. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), reliable scientific research has found the following. There are as many as eight to 25 attempted suicides to one completed suicide - with the ratio even higher in youth.
The strongest risk factors for attempted suicide in youth are depression, substance abuse, and aggressive or disruptive behaviors. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that males are four times more likely to die from suicide than females. Females are more likely to attempt suicide than males. Firearms are used in over half of youth suicides”
“Everyone who lives, dies. Yet not everyone who dies, has lived. We take these risks not to escape life, but to prevent life from escaping us” says Jerome Dauost. This is the main reason that our young people are committing suicide is because their situations has robbed them of their privilege to live and enjoy life. Their daily routine of life has become torture and the constant feeling of not being enough makes them do the unthinkable.
We probably feel that this doesn’t have anything to do with you cause it is not your child but your child will have difficulties when there is no one to take the lead with our country when your are not here anymore.
Now we know the situation that we as South Africans are facing what are we going to do about it?
