The Great Outdoors - Not So Great For Skin

It was the studies of the identical twins that originally led to the conclusion about the sun causing skin wrinkling. As time has gone by, dermatologists and other researchers have been able to do more than observe the visible signs of skin aging. They can see what goes on at a molecular level.
Major Cause of Wrinkles
Within the skin, there are highly reactive molecules known as free radicals. When the skin is exposed to UV radiation from the sun, the number and the activity of the radical molecules increases.
DNA's Role in Wrinkling
If left unchecked, the activity of the radical molecules can damage the membranes of skin cells and eventually the DNA of the mother cells. The mother cells are responsible for producing new cells throughout a person's life.
When the DNA of the mother cell is damaged, the copy she produces is no longer an exact duplicate of her. That is actually what causes wrinkles and fine lines, as well as other signs of aging. Scientists refer to it as free radical damage.
But, the latest reports from dermatologists have stated emphatically that free radical damage is the most important part of what causes wrinkles and fine lines. When free radicals damage or mutate DNA, they can also cause the production of a cancer cell. This is why overexposure to the sun is considered a cause of cancer.
All of these scientific observations have yielded solutions and treatments, maybe not for skin cancer, but for wrinkling and other outward signs of aging.
More Skin Wrinkle Cause
Other things may be involved. In most cases, it is a combination of factors that contribute to an aged appearance. Excessive dryness, poor nutrient intake, genetics, habitual facial expressions, decreased production of new cells and degradation of the skin's elastic fibers could all be involved.
