Our Government's Master Clock Keeper
The US Naval Observatory is the official source of time for the Department of Defense (DoD) and for the Global Positioning System more widely known as GPS, and is considered a standard of time for the United States. The US Naval Observatory displays the time on its master clock from all the different time zones in the United States. The time zones listed are: Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), Central Daylight Time (CDT), Mountain Daylight Time (MDT), Pacific Daylight Time (PDT), Alaska Daylight Time (ADT), and Hawaii Standard Time (HST).
The animated clock also displays the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). UTC has recently replaced Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) as an international standard for time. Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) differs from TAI or International Atomic Time, by an integral number of seconds. UTC is kept within 0.9 seconds of UT1 by the introduction of one-second steps to UTC, the "leap second." To date these steps have always been positive. The International Atomic Time scale, which is a statistical time scale that is based on many atomic clocks.
This website, now located on the Naval Oceanography Portal, has more about the subject of time than most people need to know, but It does have some interesting information on it. It is a good thing that our Department of Defense realizes the importance of a master clock. Even though the majority of us will never have a need to know, the information is there for those who do.
In addition to information about time, The Naval Oceanography Portal also has information regarding the orientation of the earth, astronomy, meteorology, oceanography and ice. It is amazing to read and has a lot of good information. There are also links to other government websites such as NOAA, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The Portal is the new home of the Navy's master clock. The Portal is an interesting website that would be very good to use for research on these topics. It is also a good site to take a look at to see what the Government is doing with your tax dollars. Even though we may not realize the importance of the information, it is important information for the people who need to know.
