Home Wind Generator - Is Your Home Right For A Wind Generator?
Home wind generators are here. But even a modest model can represent a sizable investment. Is the payoff there? Here are some things to think about before taking the plunge.
_____
A home wind generator is ready and able to offer a homeowner a real-world alternative to electricity purchased off the grid. Or at least a portion of that electricity. But wind power makes dollars and sense only if your property meets the basic criteria by which a home wind generator becomes practical. Let's explore...
Five Requirements That Make A Home Wind Generator Practical
You Need Wind (Surprise!)
First up, the homeowner needs a reliable source of wind, and plenty of it. The Department of Energy advises that locations considering wind power need winds clocking in at an annual wind speeds of 9.8 to 11.5 mph. You can find out the average wind speeds in your general area by consulting a wind resource map. The DOE, among other entities, publish such maps by region.
You Need Clearance
Your geographical area might have a qualifying wind speed, but all that is for naught if you don't have clearance on your property to be able to access that wind. If you're in a hollow or valley, for example. A homeowner will need to be able to get a turbine 30 feet above wind obstructions like trees, buildings, etc. to avoid turbulence that can reduce energy efficiency and even damage the turbine. At least an acre of land is recommended for optimal siting of a tower, a buffer for aesthetics and noise, etc. In some cases, zoning may require that amount of land - or more.
You Need Legalities On Your Side
Speaking of zoning, local zoning requirements will need to allow for home wind generators. One zoning fight that has become all too common: tower height. While local zoning departments have a degree of discretion when it comes to issuing waivers for residential wind turbines, the homeowner should expect no favors going in. The take away: contact your local zoning office early in the planning stage to minimize aggravation as the project progresses.
Your Monthly Energy Bills Must Bite
Your energy expenses need to be relatively significant. If you're being charged $150 a month or more for electricity from your local utility, a home wind generator could save you money provided the above conditions are also met. Why do your monthly bills need to be so much? A home wind generator represents a sizable initial investment. The payout on that investment is the contribution it makes every month to your energy needs. The higher the cost of electricity, the greater the dollar contribution from a wind system. And the greater the dollar contribution, the shorter the payback period and the sooner the system can begin delivering energy at a cost of zero or near zero.
On the other hand, a homeowner who uses very little electricity will see a minimal dollar contribution from a wind system, and a longer payback time framer. Indeed, there is a point at which payback is so long that it matches the functional life of the system, and no real savings is ever generated. $150 a month is a rule of thumb to ensure some level of cost savings over the life of a home wind system.
You Must Be Comfortable With The Long Term
Finally, the homeowner needs to be comfortable living with a long-term investment. As alluded to in the above section, payback on a home wind generator is measured in years.
